Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) is a marsh plant from South and Southeast Asia. Since thousands of years, it is used in ayurvedic medicine in India. They give brahmi to newborns to open them “the gate to intelligence”. During the recent past brahmi experienced a renaissance especially for students.
Brahmi contains bacosides and saponins to which an enhancement on cognitive skills is attributed. Studies especially indicate positive effects during long-term use on memory, visual and verbal processing of information as well as reduction of anxiety states. An adaptogen effect has also been measured, that is an enhanced adaptation to stressful situations. This is why an administration over several weeks is recommended to achieve the highest possible effectiveness.
There are many possibilities to partake brahmi. Firstly, one can eat the leaves of the brahmi plant, which taste faily bitter. But there are also brahmi teas, brahmi powder and brahmi extracts. We always recommend to back on brahmi extract. The advantage of it is that they are standardized to bacosides (mostly 50%), which enables a better dosage. Furthermore, scientific studies have also been carried out with corresponding brahmi extracts.
